Bean bags are among the most affordable type of seating in addition to being among the most comfortable because the chair automatically conforms to a variety of body shapes. Bean bags are great for using in family recreational rooms as well as student dorm rooms and are easy to transport from one place to the next whenever necessary. Although this type of chair takes its name from the material originally used as a filler, there are two basic materials you can use today to fill your bean bags whenever you want to revitalize them.
Beads constructed of polystyrene are among the most popular materials used as bean bag filling. Polystyrene beads allow a person to sit on a Bean Bag and have the beads compress down from their weight temporarily until the person shifts positions or gets up and the beads return back to their original shape. A Bean Bag filled with polystyrene beads is comfortable to sit on because they move naturally no matter which direction a person shifts their body parts while sitting on the chair. Although this type of material is durable enough to last for several years, eventually the beads lose their ability to spring back into shape and must be replaced in order for the Bean Bag to provide comfortable seating.
PU foam is among the many types of foam that provide an excellent material to use to fill Bean Bags. This type of filler material is comprised of high-density foam broken up into very small pieces. One of the advantages to using Polyurethane Foam as a Bean Bag filling material is that it provides plenty of support for the body’s weight when the chair is being used, and offers a soft and comfortable surface for relaxing. By shaking the Bean Bag chair in order to redistribute the positioning of the PU foam inside the chair, it is easy to make the Bean Bag a comfortable place to sit and recline again and again. Like polystyrene beads, polyurethane foam is durable and likely to last for several years. But over time, the foam becomes much less soft and flexible and begins to stiffen, making it necessary to replace this filling in order to keep the Bean Bag comfortable.
Foam or Beads
Foam filling is best when the user of the Bean Bag requires less in the way of back support and prefers a round chair that serves as a place to lounge in a reclined position. Choose polystyrene beads if the user of the Bean Bag prefers more support for his back when seated on the Bag. Foam is great to use as a filling for chairs of all sizes, but beads as a chair filling is usually limited to smaller sized Bean Bags. Foam material is also less expensive than polystyrene beads to use as a material to fill your Bean Bags. In order to obtain the firmness and support provided by foam filling as well as the flexibility of bead filling, consider filling your Bean Bags with a mixture of the two to give you a chair that is soft and comfortable enough to sit in but at the same time provides enough back support.
