Getting older doesn’t mean having to resign yourself to fine lines, wrinkles and other telltale signs of aging. An effective anti-aging routine can keep these issues at bay, allowing you to retain a healthy, glowing, youthful appearance well into middle age and beyond. Dermatologists know more about skin than anyone, so familiarize yourself with their most tried-and-true anti-aging tips to keep your skin looking spectacular.
Five Dermatologist-Approved Anti-Aging Tips
Put the following tips to work to ward off age spots, wrinkles and other signs of aging:
1. Shield Your Skin from the Sun
Sun exposure is, without question, the number-one cause of prematurely aged skin. Whether you plan to be in the sun or not, always apply a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 before leaving the house. For convenience, consider investing in face moisturizer with built-in sunscreen. Wear wide-brimmed hats when out in the sun, and sit in the shade or under an umbrella if you must be in it at midday in particular.
2. Nourish Your Body
The outward appearance of the skin–which is the largest organ in the body–is directly impacted by the things you put in your body. Stay hydrated by drinking at least one liter of water per day. Steer clear of sugar and processed foods whenever possible. Even if you get plenty of nutrients in your diet, take a vitamin D supplement. Ensure you take in plenty of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; olive oil, flaxseed and fish like salmon are all excellent sources. Finally, drink alcohol sparingly. Red wine has health benefits but also dilates the blood vessels, which can exacerbate conditions like rosacea.
3. Stick with an AM/PM Routine
Take steps to care for your skin right after getting up and immediately before going to bed. Once you do this consistently, it will become a habit. Before bed, thoroughly wash your face to remove makeup, oil and other contaminants. Change your pillowcase regularly; a dirty one can clog pores and cause other issues. Upon waking, wash your face with a gentle cleanser and apply a moisturizer. Use one with silicone, as it acts like a primer by filling in fine lines and is an excellent base for makeup.
4. Use Anti-Aging Serum
Prior to bed and before heading out for the day, smooth on a fine layer of moisturizing serum. Use one that’s designed to ward off the signs of aging. The best anti-aging serums contain retinoids, which are great because retinoids, derivatives of vitamin A, enhance cell turnover, boost collagen production, stimulate blood vessels and unclog pores. Many serums also contain antioxidants, which are great because they ward off the damaging effects of free radicals. We recommend this anti aging serum.
5. Regenerate Your Skin
Even if you are consistent about your skincare routine, dead cells will build up over time. Many anti-aging products are geared toward correcting this issue, including exfoliating peels and microdermabrasion creams. Such products can typically be used once or twice a week. For even deeper exfoliation, use a chemical peel about once or twice per month. You can do it yourself, or you can go to a local spa to have the peel done for you. Either way, using these regenerative products will help keep your skin looking fresh, bright, glowing and, most importantly of all, young.
If your skin is already showing the signs of aging, don’t fret. It’s never too late to start engaging in proven anti-aging skincare techniques. The sooner you do, of course, the sooner you’ll see results. You may be able to reverse some of the existing signs of aging, and you will surely ward off new ones for a long time to come.
